Research Writing (or, if you go into the social sciences or natural sciences: literature review, cuz you'll get
laughed at if you call it research):
What is research writing (ughhh Literature Review Writing unless you're frikkin experimentin' on peeps):
"systematic process of gathering information to answer a question" (Troyke and Hesse 492).
Primary Sources:
direct observations
interviews
surveys
measurements
original documents
records
Secondary Sources:
books
journal articles
Planning your project:
Look at the due date. How much time do you have?
Look at the project requirements. How many sources? How many pages?
Budget your time to give enough for source finding, sorting, reading, note taking, and the actual writing of
paper, revising, editing, and proofing of paper.
Or alternatively, leave it all until the night before it's due. Right? NO!
Take the time to peruse the chapter in the Handbook, looking specifically at the summary boxes for helpful
ideas.
